Day 10 - From Brown to Red

I decided to ride solo to catch the sunrise from Mesa Verde before we trekked to Grand Canyon NP.  My bike seat came in handy as a tripod, lol!

The trip from Mesa Verde to the Grand Canyon has definitely been the most amazing part of the trip just to see the transition from the browns of Colorado to the reds of Arizona.

Southern Colorado

A "twisty" section (not quite twisty enough for my MINI friends, lol!)

Starting to see the reds in Arizona

Unbelievable geographic features

The temperatures soared as we headed south

Of course, a trip out west would not be complete without a stop at the Four Corners.  So here's our obligatory "put the kids in each state" photo!

Also had our first experience with Native American beggars.  We stopped to have lunch in Kayente, AZ and two Native Americans (one walking and one in a wheel chair) approached us asking for help and a cold drink.  It was upsetting to Graeme - he just wanted to leave.  Can't say that I blame him - it was pretty sad...

The Grand Canyon!  Just WOW!!!  We came in on Rt. 64 and got a couple of views of the Canyon right away.

Graeme's first view of the Grand Canyon

And no sooner did we pull up to check in at the campground and we were rewarded with this massive elk.  Camping tents were only yards away and we've since had them wandering right here in camp.  Pretty awesome!

I am very much enjoying traveling with your family via this blog!

  2. Thanks, gals! And to think in a little more than a week we'll be amongst Giant Redwoods in Northern California. Pretty excited to see this country the way we are - it was great to see the kids really interested in taking in the scenery on the way here. I didn't really see that in Kansas, lol!
